Work Example
Service learning was an interesting class to be in at the time, because I was one of the youngest people in it. Typically, you are supposed to be a junior or a senior taking this class, but I was only a sophomore. This class enabled me to learn how to work with a group and plan out teaching lessons for the kids at the middle school we were assigned to. As somebody who is not exactly known for their planning, ability, or their love of children, I will say it was a challenging time. I ended up enjoying very much being with the children and teaching them new parts of Japanese culture which they had never heard before, but I also found it very difficult to come up with ideas that were age-appropriate. This class, however, did focus on us being able to communicate our experiences in Japanese and in English. It did also feel like we were doing a class on child development too. Advanced Japanese service learning achieved MLO 1 by having us better understand the Japanese language by remembering just how difficult it is to teach someone Japanese who had never heard or seen it before, while also figuring out how to communicate in a way that is much more befitting people who are at an intermediate advanced level. I believe this class would be extremely beneficial to people wishing to join the JET program or further get their credentials in teaching, as the class gave first hand experience on how to manage a classroom and lesson plan.
WLC 300: WLC Major ProSeminar
This course introduces students to the Japanese Language and Culture, or Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures majors. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs, including literature, culture and linguistics, and to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, such as graduate education and teaching credential preparation.
MLO 3 Secondary Culture Other Than Japanese & MLO 4 Research & Technology
I unfortunately could not find any digital work for this class in my google drive. In truth, I do not really remember fully what we did in this class as it was 4 years ago, however, I do know that the class required us to do continuous learning assessments and demonstrate out knowledge of professional opportunities. We were taught how to refine our resumes, make career goals, and how to find and apply to jobs. Our written skills were also developed in order for us to be able to communicate in a professional and eloquent manner, befitting of someone joining the work force either in America or Japan. The course also aimed for us to be able to apply the previous knowledge we had attained through other Japanese language and culture classes into what we were learning at the time, in order to make sure that we were properly prepared to apply for the JET program if we wish to do so.
