WLC 300
The whole point of this MLO is to take a secondary culture course which does not involve your own major. For my case, it was taking a Mexican culture and history course since I’m a Japanese major. This was incredibly interesting to take as I am Mexican American, my mother being a Mexican immigrant, yet I had not really ever been taught about Mexico’s history or been raised around my culture much. In my class WLC 300, the whole entire point was to teach us about Mexico‘s history, along with the culture, and the impact Mexico had on Southern California, as it was originally the property of Mexico. Through this class I was able to finally get a better understanding of my ancestry and as well as the place where I mother is from. I do hope to continue on learning about this, as I would like to reconnect with my culture, much more, as well as be able to finally understand what my family knows. I also have many family members who are still alive today, and have experienced many of the critical moments of history in Mexico, therefore, it would be nice to be able to connect with them about it and ask them further questions, once I finally understand the scenarios they were in. I will say I did find part of this. I’m a little challenging, because parts of it were taught in Spanish, and I do not speak Spanish. Therefore, I did miss out on some of the more critical points as I did not understand what was happening. Unfortunately I cannot find any of the proof of this class. Beyond just class notes which involves doing group work, however, I can in fact tell that I was able to actually find out part of my own family’s history through this class due to learning about Pancho Villa. Do you taking this class, I am considering possibly visiting Mexico as well and trying to learn more about the history and culture. By doing this, I hope they feel better connection to my own ancestry and familial ties, as I have never felt closely connected to them due to being raised in the area does predominantly Asian. Therefore, I believe my own personal intellect had grown while taking the class, as I was not only able to understand Japanese culture, but my own culture even better.
