In JAPN 320S, my group and I were assigned to teach about Japanese culture to the after school students of La Mesa Elementary School. We were tasked with creating and carrying out lesson plans, along with learning how to execute classroom management. In addition, Professor Saito-Abbott also had us learn about early to late stage child development. as a means to better understand how to connect with the students on a scientific and psychological level. By assigning us these responsibilities, we the class developed the skills to work collaboratively across multiple age ranges and amongst a diverse group of people. Therefore, all of us learned how to problem solve, gain more patience, and become more compassionate towards others. Having us also consistently present in Japanese about our time teaching, what we could improve, and how it tied back into the classroom lesson, insured us that we'd reach our goal for MLO 1 as we demonstrated Intermediate–high level of language proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Guidelines. In conclusion, JAPN 320S Advanced Service Learning allowed us to develop our skills to be multicultural community builders, able to build common ground amongst multiple cultures which is important in making our society more equal and just.
