As this MLO involves language and cultural learning, it is arguable that almost every single class I have been in has fulfilled this outcome. From my first ever Japanese language/grammar class I took in college, JAPN 300, to the last one I will take as a student here at CSUMB, JAPN 404, I have been provided with the proper tools to grow my linguistic skills so that I may meet an intermediate-high level of communication. Although my speaking abilities took quite a hit during COVID, I still believe I have improved greatly. In the link I attached labeled 神社, you can see that my grammatical structure and sentence structure is incredibly simple. Although this does make sense as I had just gotten out of high school at the time. This was one of the first ever major assignments I did when I first came to college, which although I believed it was very good at the time I can now see that I’ve had massive improvements since then when it comes to my writing ability in Japanese. My improvement is most obvious in my Japanese Capstone slides, which I have linked and is labeled “異なる人種と民族のアイデンティティに関する日米大学生の見解”. In it we can see that my grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary has become much more refined and met the MLO requirement oh intermediate-high thanks to all the aforementioned listed classes which got me to where I am today. However, with that being said, I do believe that I need to still improve in this area, as I did not get to do my study abroad, and therefore, still struggle with communicating in a more natural influent way; compared to how it would be if I had been in Japan for a year.
I believe my own personal intellect has grown while completing the MLO’s, by allowing me to further expand my understanding of what is respectful, professional, and what is ok for every day language use. By learning the customs of Japan, it has allowed me to integrate them into my own personal life, so that I may come off as a more well rounded individual and as someone who is more intelligent. I hope to continue growing in this area so that I may fully become fluent in Japanese in the future. Although this will be incredibly difficult, seeing as I do not have any plans to be in Japan long-term anytime soon, I believe that with my hard work and my ambition, I will be able to achieve this. I will also make sure to continuously use the information and knowledge passed down to me through these classes, in order to accomplish my goal as well.
